Why we recommend

Medik8’s Crystal Retinal series gives you the tools you need to tackle wrinkles and brighten your complexion quickly. Crystal Retinal comes in five strengths, from 0.01% retinal to 0.2% retinal, making it easy to start with a gentle serum and work up to stronger serums if your skin needs them and can handle them. Crystal Retinal 1 contains 0.01% retinal, a minimal dose; Crystal Retinal 3 contains 0.03% retinal; Crystal Retinal 6 contains 0.06% retinal, a mid-range dose; Crystal Retinal 10 contains 0.1% retinal; and Crystal Retinal 20 contains 0.2% retinal for vigorous action.

Medik8 Crystal Retinal 6

Anti-ageing night serum with 0.06% retinal for smoothing and brightening your skin

Medik8 Crystal Retinal 6 is a high-performance anti-ageing serum designed to improve your skin overnight with the power of retinal, the stronger cousin of retinol. Crystal Retinal 6 has 0.06% retinal, a moderate concentration; the Crystal Retinal range includes both higher and lower concentrations.

  • Reduces wrinkles quickly
  • Comes in five strengths so you can match your skin’s needs
  • Improves skin texture, brightness, and clarity
  • Uses retinal to give results 11 times faster than regular retinol
  • Hydrates your skin and protects it with antioxidants

An independent clinical study of Medik8 Crystal Retinal tested on 33 subjects over a 12-week period showed highly positive results. All participants felt that Crystal Retinal was gentle on their skin, and 97% of them rated their skin as having a more youthful appearance. Participants showed a 20% reduction in the appearance of wrinkles, a similar reduction in visible hyperpigmentation, and an 11% increase in skin firmness.

Retinol and Retinoids

All Skin Types

Your skin consists of three main layers: the epidermis on the outside; the dermis below it; and below that the hypodermis, also called the subcutaneous layer. The lower part of the epidermis constantly generates new skin cells, pushing older cells in the upper layers of the epidermis to the surface, where they eventually die. These dead skin cells form a protective layer, but they can also make your skin uneven and dull-looking.

Crystal Retinal speeds up your skin’s natural turnover of cells and encourages your body to boost production of collagen, the vital protein that provides the scaffolding and structure for your skin. This increase in collagen production helps to make fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots less visible. Crystal Retinal also provides hyaluronic acid to hydrate your skin and vitamin E to help repair and protect it.

Apply Medik8 Crystal Retinal in the evening. Cleanse your skin, and then massage two pumps’ worth of the serum into your face and neck. After your skin absorbs the serum, apply your moisturiser.

When you’re getting started with Crystal Retinal, don’t use it every day. Apply Crystal Retinal twice a week for the first two weeks, every other day for the next two weeks, and then every night.

Use sunscreen to protect your skin during the day.

What is the difference between retinol and retinal?

Both retinol and retinal (which is also called retinaldehyde) are forms of vitamin A that are used in skincare to reduce the signs of ageing and to improve skin tone and texture. Retinol and retinal have different chemical structures and so have different effects on the human body.

To affect your skin, both retinol and retinal need to be converted to retinoic acid, an active form of vitamin A. Retinol needs two conversion steps, first from retinol to retinal, and then from retinal to retinoic acid. By contrast, retinal need only the single conversion step, from retinal to retinoic acid. This difference makes retinal more potent and faster acting than retinol.

Why should I use Crystal Retinal only twice a week at first?

When you begin using any retinol product, start slowly to prevent irritation occurring. This slow start is extra important with a retinal product, given how much faster retinal works than retinol.

Despite this extra speed, it may take two to three days for the full effects of Crystal Retinal on your skin to become apparent. So if you apply a second dose of Crystal Retinal too soon, you may irritate your skin and get symptoms such as sensitivity, dryness, redness, or peeling skin. Instead, start with twice a week and give your skin time to build up its tolerance to retinal.
